An unnamed eight-year-old girl lives on a remote English farm and possesses a strange power she cannot control: when someone makes her furious, her finger releases magic with unpredictable results. Her neighbors, the Gregg family, delight in shooting birds and animals, despite her pleas that they stop. After they mock her following another hunt, her anger transforms the entire family into tiny, winged figures. Suddenly displaced from their home and exposed to danger, the hunters find themselves at the mercy of the ducks they once targeted. This compact children’s fantasy uses grotesque reversals, comic menace, and a child’s fierce sense of justice to confront cruelty toward animals and the consequences of refusing empathy.
