A biologist joins three other women on the twelfth expedition into Area X, a coastal wilderness sealed by the government after previous teams vanished, died, or returned profoundly changed. Her own husband came back from the eleventh expedition without his memory and later died of cancer. Recording events in a field journal, she observes an ecosystem of unsettling beauty and an unmapped underground structure whose walls bear an apparently endless fungal inscription. Distrust grows when the team’s psychologist uses hypnosis to control perception and the biologist suspects she has become immune. As strange animals and an unidentified presence press closer, Annihilation combines ecological science fiction with psychological horror, asking whether identity can survive sustained contact with the unknowable.
