A Victorian scientist known as the Time Traveller demonstrates a machine capable of carrying a person through time, then recounts to his dinner guests what happened when he tested it himself. In the year 802,701, he finds the childlike Eloi living amid decaying structures, apparently freed from work, property, family, and conflict. Their effortless existence soon appears less idyllic: they lack curiosity, fear the dark, and avoid the empty wells puncturing their landscape. When his machine disappears, the Traveller must investigate a society divided between the surface-dwelling Eloi and the subterranean Morlocks. H. G. Wells combines scientific adventure with social criticism, projecting Victorian class inequality into a distant future where abundance has not ended exploitation but transformed both the exploiters and the exploited.
