Description

In the kingdom of Delain, the magician Flagg recognizes that the good-hearted Prince Peter threatens his influence and begins plotting to destroy him. Peter’s younger brother, Thomas, grows up in the heir’s shadow, and his jealousy gives Flagg a willing target for manipulation. When the king dies from poisoned wine, Flagg uses Peter’s nightly service to frame him for the crime. Peter is confined in the Needle while the inexperienced Thomas takes the throne under the magician’s guidance, leaving Delain vulnerable to corruption from within. An unnamed storyteller recounts the struggle in the direct, conversational manner of a dark fairy tale. The novel combines imprisonment, court intrigue, sibling rivalry, and magic in a contest over whether patience and loyalty can outlast fear and deception.
