Nell is a tribeless child growing up in a slum on New Chusan, an artificial island within a future transformed by nanotechnology and competing cultural systems. At four, she receives a stolen interactive book called the Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer. The device adapts its stories and lessons to Nell, teaching her to survive, reason, question authority, and reshape the conditions around her. Her education becomes entangled with the troubles of John Hackworth, the engineer who illicitly copied the Primer and is drawn into a covert struggle for power. As Nell’s expanding abilities alter her place in the world, the novel examines education as both intimate relationship and political technology, asking how stories, machines, communities, and human guidance combine to form an independent mind.
