Rincewind is an incompetent wizard in Ankh-Morpork whose strongest talent is surviving disasters by running away from them. His luck worsens when he is forced to guide Twoflower, a wealthy and dangerously naïve tourist whose death could provoke an invasion. Accompanied by Twoflower’s indestructible, sentient Luggage, the pair flee across Discworld while the gods watch their progress for entertainment. Their journey carries them through strange regions inhabited by trolls, dragon-riders, comic officials, and exaggerated versions of familiar fantasy dangers; even Hrun the Barbarian, a mighty sword-and-sorcery hero, joins their wandering company. The episodic adventure treats heroic quests as accidents and turns Rincewind’s desperate self-preservation into a comic tour of a world governed by absurdity, chance, and unreliable magic.
