In Ankh-Morpork, a secret order summons a dragon as part of a scheme to replace the city’s ruler with a controllable monarch. The Night Watch is accustomed to being ignored and achieving very little, but idealistic new recruit Carrot begins to unsettle that comfortable ineptitude. Captain Sam Vimes connects a stolen book of magic to the creature, and the investigation leads the Watch to Lady Sybil Ramkin, who breeds small swamp dragons. Then a supposedly extinct noble dragon appears, burns through opposition, and is crowned king. Terry Pratchett combines a police investigation with comic fantasy, using civic chaos and heroic legend to examine authority, corruption, and what happens when neglected public servants decide to do their jobs.
