Description

Mort is a fantasy novel about an awkward, thoughtful teenager who is poorly suited to his family’s farming life. At a hiring fair, he unexpectedly becomes apprentice to Death and enters a household that includes Albert and Ysabell. Mort learns that Death’s duties are governed by predetermined fate and ordinarily cannot be changed. Yet when he interferes with an assignment involving Princess Keli, the world begins having trouble recognizing her existence. Meanwhile, Death experiments with human life, and Mort increasingly adopts his master’s mannerisms and personality. Their changing roles turn an unusual apprenticeship into a comic story about duty, identity, and the consequences of defying fate.
