Recently released thief John Dortmunder wants a straightforward job, but his schemes have a habit of collapsing. A United Nations representative hires him and his partner Kelp to steal the $500,000 Balabomo Emerald, claimed by the Talabwo after their former British colony gains independence and divides into rival states. Dortmunder assembles a small crew and devises a careful theft, only to discover that taking the stone once will not be enough. As the emerald repeatedly slips from their control, each recovery demands a new plan, new disguises, and a fresh confrontation with institutions better protected than the last. The novel turns an international dispute into a comic caper about professional ingenuity, stubborn luck, and one criminal’s exhausting refusal to surrender.
