On the French Riviera in the late Jazz Age, psychiatrist Dick Diver and his wife and patient, Nicole, preside over a glamorous circle of American expatriates. Their villa and social ease captivate Rosemary Hoyt, a young actress who becomes close to the couple and is drawn to Dick. Yet she senses instability beneath their hospitality: Nicole struggles with mental illness, while Dick’s professional authority and personal discipline begin to erode into alcoholism. The marriage’s tangled origins make care, dependence, money, and desire difficult to separate. Told through shifting chronology in its original form, the novel moves behind the Divers’ polished public life to examine how charm becomes performance and how one partner’s recovery can coincide with the other’s decline.
