About F. Scott Fitzgerald

F. Scott Fitzgerald was an American novelist, essayist, and short-story writer whose fiction gave the Jazz Age both its enduring images and its name. He wrote about money, status, romance, and self-invention, especially where private longing meets the protections and demands of class. His prose is lyrical and sharply descriptive, often moving through vivid, partly disconnected scenes rather than steady exposition. The Great Gatsby filters spectacle through Nick Carraway’s divided first-person witness, setting crowded parties, the valley of ashes, and Gatsby’s rehearsed identity around a tightly controlled pursuit of Daisy Buchanan. Fitzgerald also varied chronology and viewpoint. In Tender Is the Night, the polished social world of Dick and Nicole Diver gradually opens onto illness, dependence, money, and Dick’s decline. This Side of Paradise is looser and wittier, following Amory Blaine through campus ambition, war, romance, and repeated failures of self-knowledge. Whether his characters inherit privilege or try to perform their way into it, Fitzgerald attends closely to the language, gestures, and social arrangements that sustain their illusions.
