Three thematically connected novellas follow men whose desires push them across moral, social, and psychological boundaries. In “The Bailbondsman,” an aging Cincinnati bondsman investigates a murder involving a trusted employee as his authority begins to erode. “The Making of Ashenden” centers on a wealthy, cultivated man who pursues personal purification in hopes of marrying a seriously ill woman. In “The Condominium,” a thirty-seven-year-old former lecturer and lifelong bachelor moves into a Chicago apartment building and finds himself drawn toward his father’s established way of life. Through dark comedy, surreal escalation, and ornate prose, Stanley Elkin examines the elaborate justifications people construct around sex, money, aging, death, and unstable ideas of who they might become.
