Across five linked sections, George Mills follows a working-class lineage whose men inherit not only the same name but the same habit of serving the powerful. The first George leaves on the First Crusade, loses contact with his lord, and wanders toward a Polish salt mine. Later Millses move through European, Ottoman, and American history, taking jobs as stable boys and furniture movers while recognizing the pattern that confines them. In the modern era, the latest George turns his attention to the family’s long record of obedience and considers whether he can depart from it. The novel uses its millennium-long design to examine class, fatalism, inherited identity, and the difficult gap between understanding a life and changing it.
