Dorothy Bliss, an elderly Russian-born Jewish widow, lives alone in a retirement community near Miami Beach, far from the Lower East Side where she first worked after immigrating to America. Her husband’s death has loosened the family-centered structure that once organized her days, leaving her children anxious and Dorothy unsure what comes next. Seeking romance and companionship, she ventures beyond familiar routines and meets men whose interest extends to her late husband’s Buick, including a neighborhood drug lord. Her children respond by recommending therapy, but Dorothy continues testing the possibilities of independence. Stanley Elkin’s comic novel follows an aging woman as memory, desire, family vigilance, and urban danger collide in a later life she must learn to define for herself.
