Rock star Bucky Wunderlick retreats from fame to a stripped-down Manhattan apartment, hoping to escape the public image and commercial machinery built around him. Isolation proves impossible. A domestic terrorist group has entrusted him with a drug that impairs language and now wants his participation, while militant intruders unsettle the building where he has taken refuge. The theft of Bucky’s unreleased recordings further entangles artistic control, money, and personal identity. As he drifts among these pressures, his uneasy connections with troubled neighbors widen the novel beyond the spectacle of celebrity. Alienated and darkly comic, Great Jones Street examines withdrawal as another kind of performance, placing rock culture, political violence, language, and commodification inside the same unstable urban enclosure.
