Pammy and Lyle Wynant possess the surfaces of an affluent New York life: professional jobs, a polished apartment, and a marriage legible as success. Beneath them lie boredom, sexual estrangement, empty conversation, and a diffuse hunger for disruption. After Lyle witnesses a killing on the Stock Exchange floor, he becomes involved with the terrorists responsible, whose violent rhetoric offers an alternative to his numb routine. Pammy, meanwhile, leaves the city for Maine with a gay couple, extending the marriage’s emotional separation into physical distance. Moving between corporate interiors, private fantasies, and political violence, Players uses deadpan, fragmented narration to examine people who remain spectators even when they enter the action—and whose comfortable detachment helps create the conditions they fail to comprehend.
