In 1886 Soho, Adolf Verloc keeps a shop, lives with his wife and her vulnerable brother Stevie, and secretly serves a foreign embassy. His associates are ineffectual anarchists who publish revolutionary pamphlets while remaining familiar to the police. When an embassy official orders Verloc to bomb Greenwich Observatory, the goal is not destruction alone but public outrage that can justify repression of anarchism. The assignment draws spies, militants, and competing police investigators into calculations that treat private lives as expendable instruments. Verloc’s divided household becomes inseparable from the political scheme, placing Stevie at particular risk. Conrad’s dark, ironic spy novel examines terrorism, state provocation, ideological vanity, and the exploitation concealed beneath claims of public necessity.
