Piranesi records his life in a journal kept within the House, a seemingly infinite world of halls filled with distinctive statues, clouds above, and an ocean below. He charts the tides, catalogs his surroundings, and studies the few signs of other inhabitants with patient devotion. His principal companion is the Other, a mysterious man who supplies objects from outside and recruits him to search for hidden knowledge. The Other also warns that the House erodes memory and personality, and that a dangerous sixteenth person may appear. When Piranesi finds journal entries he cannot remember writing and receives a message from the newcomer, his orderly understanding begins to fracture. The novel unfolds as an atmospheric mystery about identity, solitude, knowledge, and the stories memory makes possible.
