Pastoralia gathers darkly comic stories about Americans trying to preserve dignity inside workplaces, families, and entertainment systems that make absurd demands seem ordinary. In the title story, employees inhabit a simulated theme-park cave, performing primitive life for visitors while news from home arrives by fax. Elsewhere, a family becomes absorbed in a computer-generated television program called The Worst That Could Happen, and an upbeat self-help guru traces everyday unhappiness to buried resentment. George Saunders blends deadpan realism with surreal premises, corporate language, and uneasy tenderness, exposing the compromises people make for money, approval, and belonging. The collection’s strange environments magnify familiar pressures without extinguishing the possibility of sympathy or hope.
