In the aftermath of World War II, nurse Claire Beauchamp travels to Scotland on a second honeymoon and walks through an ancient standing stone. She emerges in 1743, an outsider stranded in a country divided by warfare, clan rivalries, and political suspicion. Her medical knowledge is useful but also makes her vulnerable in a society quick to distrust an independent woman. Survival increasingly binds her to Jamie Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose dangers become entangled with her own, while the marriage and life she left in the twentieth century remain painfully real. Combining historical fiction, romance, adventure, and fantasy, the novel builds its central tension around Claire’s divided loyalties and the practical challenge of making choices across two irreconcilable times.
