Exiled from his father's kingdom after accidentally killing a nobleman's son, Patroclus is sent to Phthia, where he meets the gifted prince Achilles. Their companionship deepens into love despite the opposition of Achilles's divine mother, Thetis. When Agamemnon summons the Greek kings to war against Troy, both young men are drawn into the campaign under different obligations, while a prophecy that Achilles will die there hangs over their choices. Years of fighting expose Patroclus, serving as a field medic, to suffering that heroic legend often ignores. As Achilles clashes with Agamemnon over honor, command, and the treatment of captives, devotion confronts pride and fate. Told through Patroclus's perspective, the novel recasts the Trojan War as an intimate story of love within a culture of glory and violence.
