Description

After a disastrous voyage, the Dutch ship Erasmus reaches Japan with its surviving Protestant crew exhausted, imprisoned, and stripped of their resources. Navigator John Blackthorne is brought before Lord Toranaga, who recognizes that the foreign sailor’s knowledge and vessel might prove useful against his political rivals. Japan lacks a shogun, powerful lords are maneuvering for supremacy, and Portuguese Catholics seek to preserve their control of trade and religious influence against Dutch competition. Forced to learn unfamiliar rules of language, hierarchy, honor, and survival, Blackthorne gradually gains cultural fluency, enters the samurai class, and grows closer to Toranaga and Lady Mariko. The novel sets his transformation within a large political contest in which translation, faith, commerce, intimacy, and military strategy can each alter the balance of power.
