In 1878, Tessa Gray leaves New York for London after her aunt’s death, expecting to reunite with her brother Nate. Instead, the Dark Sisters abduct her and force her to develop a power she never knew she possessed: by holding another person’s belongings, she can assume that person’s form. Her captors threaten Nate and prepare Tessa for marriage to the mysterious Magister, but Shadowhunter Will Herondale helps bring her to the London Institute. There Tessa joins an investigation involving vampires, forbidden accords, and the secretive Pandemonium Club while searching for her brother and the truth about her own nature. The novel blends Victorian fantasy, supernatural conspiracy, dangerous romance, and questions of identity and belonging.
