In early-1970s Eastwick, Rhode Island, Alexandra Spofford, Jane Smart, and Sukie Rougemont find new independence after the ends of their marriages—and discover that they possess magical powers. Their intimate circle is disrupted when the wealthy, unsettling Darryl Van Horne occupies a neglected mansion outside town. He seduces each woman, encourages her creative ambitions, and offers to cultivate their magic, though his motives remain obscure. As their abilities strengthen, private jealousies and desires begin affecting neighbors who do not understand what is happening around them. The novel combines supernatural fantasy with dark social comedy, using the women’s liberation and entanglement with Darryl to examine appetite, rivalry, creativity, and the punishments a small town reserves for female power.
