Professor Woland arrives in officially atheist Moscow with a bizarre supernatural entourage and begins exposing the vanity, greed, and cowardice of writers, bureaucrats, theater officials, and eager consumers. His public spectacles turn everyday Soviet life into escalating dark comedy, but the novel also follows the Master, a persecuted author whose manuscript about Pontius Pilate has helped destroy his confidence, and Margarita, the woman determined to recover him. Her pursuit carries her into Woland’s dangerous, carnivalesque world, while the Master’s biblical narrative unfolds alongside modern Moscow. Moving between satire, romance, fantasy, and Christian philosophy, the novel asks who possesses the authority to judge, what art can survive repression, and whether mercy can exist inside systems built on fear.
