An unnatural mist engulfs Bridgton, Maine, while David Drayton and his young son are shopping, trapping them inside a supermarket with frightened townspeople. Strange, hostile creatures move beyond the windows, making every trip outside potentially fatal, while an earthquake cuts power and communications. Inside, the shoppers divide over whether to cooperate, deny what is happening, or follow a religious faction that declares the disaster divine punishment and begins demanding sacrifice. David must protect his son as physical siege and collective panic make the store increasingly dangerous. When remaining inside no longer seems survivable, he joins a small group seeking escape through the mist. The novella pits cosmic terror against the fears, resentments, and fanaticism people manufacture for themselves.
