In four interconnected stories set after Hurricane Sandy, Frank Bascombe moves through a New Jersey landscape where physical wreckage exposes older personal damage. Returning to a storm-destroyed house, he listens as a former occupant reveals its tragic history; at an extended-care facility, he visits his former wife as she lives with Parkinson’s; and beside a dying friend, he waits for the confession of a long-buried betrayal. Frank tries to offer consolation, but each encounter forces him to reconsider his own past and the limits of what one person can repair for another. His dry, reflective narration links private aging with public calamity, creating a compact portrait of memory, loss, and the uneasy work of continuing after disruption.
