Robert Grainier, orphaned young, builds a spare life from railroad labor and other rough jobs in the American Northwest. At thirty-one he marries Gladys, has a daughter, and establishes a cabin in an Idaho valley, but work takes him away to repair a bridge in Washington. When he returns, a wildfire has erased the valley and left his wife and child missing. Grainier stays near the ruins, accompanied by a red dog and unsettled by possible signs of Gladys, while years of seasonal work carry him through a changing landscape. Train Dreams compresses one ordinary man’s long solitude into a novella about grief, endurance, and the fragile boundary between remembered life and legend.
