Richard Ford’s Wildlife is set in Great Falls, Montana, in 1960 and is narrated by sixteen-year-old Joe Brinson. After his family moves to Montana, Joe witnesses unforeseen changes that unsettle their lives. At the center of the novel is the collapse of his parents’ marriage and his mother’s affair, events he can observe but cannot control. Through Joe’s perspective, the story follows a family in crisis as familiar relationships change around him. The novel’s concentrated setting and youthful narrator keep attention on what Joe sees, understands, and struggles to make sense of as his family comes apart.
