Frank Bascombe once hoped to become a novelist; now he writes about sports and tries to inhabit a life stripped of grand expectations. Divorced and grieving the death of his son, he seeks refuge in a new relationship and in the professional habit of observing other people’s victories and defeats from a measured distance. A getaway he expects to restore some sense of order instead produces one calamity after another, exposing how little control his detached manner provides. Moving through interviews, family encounters, and uneasy intimacy, the novel turns a sportswriter’s ordinary routines into a searching study of grief, failed ambition, and the temptation to treat emotional withdrawal as freedom.
