Each autumn, twenty-two ordinary men gather to re-create one infamous play from a 1985 NFL game. Over a single weekend they draw assignments, study movements, rehearse collisions, and prepare for the few seconds that have organized years of ritual and friendship. Around that preparation, they confront changing marriages, physical decline, disappointments, and private fears, aware that age and circumstance may make this gathering their last. No single participant dominates; the group itself becomes the novel’s subject, with comedy arising from obsessive preparation and the gap between professional violence and middle-aged vulnerability. The reenactment gives their anxieties a shared form, allowing Bachelder to examine masculinity, fellowship, memory, and what men can express only through borrowed roles.
