In a post-apocalyptic Chicago divided into five factions, people whose aptitudes cross faction boundaries are labeled Divergent and hunted for their independent minds. After the upheaval of the previous novel, Tris Prior, Tobias Eaton, and their companions seek refuge among the peaceful Amity. Safety quickly collapses when Erudite forces move against the Divergents and Tris learns that Abnegation leaders died protecting secret information. As Tobias pursues an alliance with his mother’s Factionless movement, Tris joins efforts to resist Erudite, carrying them through competing strongholds and unstable loyalties. Simulations, coercion, and painful secrets test both their relationship and their judgment in a sequel about resistance, political fracture, and the cost of choosing action under pressure.
