In post-apocalyptic Chicago, every citizen belongs to one of five factions built around a defining virtue. At sixteen, Beatrice Prior must choose whether to remain with her family in Abnegation or enter another faction, knowing that failure during initiation would leave her among the outcast Factionless. Her aptitude test produces a dangerous result: she is Divergent, fitting no single category, and must keep that identity secret. Beatrice chooses the daring Dauntless, renames herself Tris, and enters a brutal competition in which only the highest-ranked recruits can stay. As she grows close to her instructor Four, the dystopian novel tests courage, conformity, and the cost of reducing complex people to rigid social types.
