Katherine, an eighteen-year-old New Jersey high school senior preparing for college, meets Michael at a New Year’s Eve party. As they date, she remains cautious and reluctant about intercourse, even while their physical intimacy develops over time. Their relationship treats sex as both an emotional and a health concern, not merely a moral question, and a planned ski trip becomes part of their gradual progression. Summer later separates Katherine and Michael into different states. Away from him, Katherine begins to recognize limits in their relationship and finds herself drawn to an older instructor. The novel traces her changing understanding of a relationship she has experienced as love.
