Eleven-year-old Peter Hatcher faces two upheavals at once: his family temporarily leaves New York City for Princeton, and his parents announce the arrival of a baby daughter. Peter’s five-year-old brother, Fudge, is furious about losing his place as the youngest child. His jealousy erupts in tantrums, attempts to intrude on Peter’s activities, and even schemes to get rid of the baby, leaving Peter to absorb much of the resulting chaos. Both boys resist the idea of a sister, but their parents make clear that the new child is permanent. Told through Peter’s exasperated perspective, the family comedy explores sibling rivalry, change, and the indignities of having no control over one’s household.
