Sixteen-year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster lives with thyroid cancer that has affected her lungs. At her mother’s urging, she attends a cancer support group, where she meets Augustus Waters, a teenage survivor whose osteosarcoma cost him a leg. Hazel and Augustus quickly form a bond and exchange favorite books. One novel, about a girl with cancer, becomes especially important to them because its abrupt ending leaves unanswered questions. Their search for answers leads to correspondence with the book’s reclusive author and sets up a planned journey to Amsterdam, where they hope to meet him in person.
