Ellie Arroway grows from a mathematically gifted child into the director of a New Mexico radio-telescope project devoted to finding extraterrestrial intelligence, despite skepticism from much of the scientific establishment. Her persistence is vindicated when the project detects a signal from Vega broadcasting prime numbers. The transmission soon reveals plans for an advanced five-seat machine, but the vast instructions cannot be decoded without a missing primer. As the United States and Soviet Union race to build the device, a scientific discovery becomes a political, technological, and philosophical crisis: humanity must decide how to answer a civilization far beyond its own capabilities. The novel joins hard science fiction with questions about evidence, faith, institutional power, and humankind’s place in the universe.
