Description

As rival superpowers compete for supremacy in space, enormous alien ships appear above Earth’s major cities. Their mysterious occupants, the Overlords, assume supervision of world affairs while leaving humans to manage ordinary life. They end war and usher in unprecedented prosperity, yet conceal their appearance and offer little explanation for their ultimate purpose. As comfort increases, humanity’s creative drive begins to fade, and the Overlords’ interest in psychic phenomena suggests that their intervention reaches beyond politics. Astrophysicist Jan Rodricks pursues clues about their origin and attempts to reach their home star. Spanning generations, the novel treats peaceful conquest as an evolutionary mystery, asking what humanity may lose when suffering, conflict, and uncertainty disappear.
