Grady Tripp, a Pittsburgh professor and novelist, cannot finish the unwieldy manuscript meant to follow his award-winning book. On the eve of the university's WordFest literary weekend, his wife leaves him, and his affair with the college chancellor becomes urgent when she announces that she is pregnant. Then Grady is pulled into a bizarre crime involving James Leer, an alienated student with unusual literary talent. As Grady tries to manage James, his marriage, his unfinished novel, and the arrival of his editor and best friend Terry Crabtree, Terry develops his own interest in James. The novel turns one chaotic weekend into a darkly comic study of creative paralysis, compromised mentorship, and adults who cannot decide what comes next.
