An unnamed thirteen-year-old boy endures systematic bullying at school because of his lazy eye. His isolation changes when he begins receiving secret letters from Kojima, a female classmate who is also targeted by their peers. Meeting away from school, the two construct a private bond around what they suffer, but they do not understand that suffering in the same way. Kojima searches for moral meaning in their endurance, while the boy struggles with shame, fear, and the possibility of resisting. Encounters with a tormentor who sees cruelty as simply another expression of power sharpen the conflict. Mieko Kawakami’s spare coming-of-age novel asks whether pain can confer value or fellowship—and what such beliefs may demand from vulnerable children.
