Mr. and Mrs. Twit are a filthy, spiteful couple who devote their energy to elaborate pranks, casual cruelty, and making each other miserable. In their windowless house, the retired circus trainers keep the Muggle-Wump monkeys captive and force them to rehearse an upside-down act. Mr. Twit also coats tree branches with glue to trap birds for Mrs. Twit’s pies. Tired of abuse, the monkeys enlist a helpful bird and turn the Twits’ own habits against them. The children’s novel builds its plot from grotesque jokes, escalating retaliation, and the pleasure of watching bullies lose control. Beneath the gleeful nastiness lies a simple contest between cruelty enforced through captivity and cooperation used as resistance.
