Fourteen-year-old Johnny Tremain is a gifted but proud silversmith’s apprentice in colonial Boston, eager to prove himself through a demanding commission for merchant John Hancock. When a deliberately caused workshop accident cripples his hand, his expected future disappears, and repeated rejections force him to seek another place in the city. Friendship with young typesetter Rab Silsbee brings Johnny to the Whig Boston Observer, where printing, street work, and secret political activity draw him into the Patriot cause. As protest gives way to the Boston Tea Party, British occupation, and a closed harbor, Johnny’s personal struggle to rebuild his life becomes inseparable from a community preparing for revolution.
