The October Country gathers nineteen macabre stories in which familiar places and private anxieties open onto the uncanny. Carnivals, cemeteries, lonely houses, and sickrooms become stages for dread, while childhood memory, bodily fear, isolation, and death recur in different forms. A poor farmer gains attention after buying a mysterious jar; a mother becomes terrified of her own newborn; and a man who acquires a powerful scythe and wheat field discovers that reaping carries a terrible burden. Elsewhere, accident crowds, hostile winds, and a suspicious upstairs tenant disturb ordinary life. Ray Bradbury moves between grotesque fantasy, melancholy, and dark humor, making the collection less a single nightmare than a tour through many varieties of fear.
