In eighteenth-century France, Addie LaRue tries to escape a forced marriage by bargaining with a dark god for freedom and endless time. The price is a future claim on her soul and a curse: everyone she meets forgets her as soon as she leaves. Across centuries, Addie survives without lasting relationships or a recognized identity, resisting the god Luc as he repeatedly presses her to surrender. Although she cannot be remembered directly, she finds ways to leave traces through art, music, and other lives. In present-day New York, the pattern breaks when Henry Strauss remembers her after their first encounter. Moving between that impossible connection and Addie’s long past, the novel explores freedom, loneliness, memory, art, and the human need to leave evidence of a life.
