Logen Ninefingers, an infamous warrior exhausted by blood feuds, survives ruin in the frozen North only to fall in with Bayaz, a wizard whose purpose remains obscure. In the Union’s capital, vain noble officer Jezal dan Luthar trains for personal glory while war approaches, and the mutilated Inquisitor Glokta tortures suspects as he follows a treason investigation toward corruption inside the government. Bayaz gradually draws these compromised men into the same widening conflict of political conspiracy, ancient grudges, and threatened invasion. Told through sharply contrasting viewpoints, the novel treats violence with grim comedy and strips heroic fantasy of moral certainty. Its soldiers, officials, and would-be champions must act in a world where survival and power blur the boundary between villainy and virtue.
