Violet Sorrengail is compelled to enter Basgiath War College and train among Navarre’s dragon riders. Trained as a scribe and physically fragile, she faces lethal instruction and competitions at the college. She reunites with her childhood friend Dain and joins Fourth Wing under the command of Xaden Riorson, whose father was executed by Violet’s mother. Other cadets include children of a suppressed rebellion who may seek revenge against her family. Those chosen by dragons develop magical signets, though many cadets are never selected. Violet ultimately bonds with two very different dragons: the powerful Tairn and the smaller Andarna.
