Brief Interviews with Hideous Men gathers stories and formal experiments about loneliness, sexual power, self-deception, and the difficulty of recognizing another person’s pain. In the recurring title sequence, unnamed men explain their behavior toward women while an interviewer’s questions remain conspicuously absent. Elsewhere, a depressed woman strains her friendships through relentless appeals for reassurance, a boy hesitates at the edge of a diving board, and an author directly confronts readers over the terms of a fictional experiment. Wallace shifts among monologues, questionnaires, conventional narratives, and structures that interrupt themselves. Humor repeatedly gives way to unease as articulate characters turn confession, analysis, and apparent honesty into instruments of evasion or control.
