Over five unsettled days, Moses E. Herzog, a forty-seven-year-old professor of cultural history, tries to think his way through exhaustion, divorce, and humiliation. His second wife has left him for a close friend after moving him to Chicago and trying to have him committed. Now, from his house in fictional Ludeyville, Massachusetts, Herzog considers returning to New York and hesitates over committing to his current partner, Ramona. Much of his turmoil pours into letters he imagines addressing to relatives, friends, public figures, and the dead, though he rarely sends them. The unsent correspondence turns private disappointment into an argument with modern existence, as Herzog searches for a form of redemption that intellect alone cannot secure.
