In the canal city of Ketterdam, criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker accepts a job that demands entry into the supposedly impenetrable Ice Court. His target is the inventor of a drug that magnifies Grisha powers and can turn gifted people into instruments of mind control, threatening nations far beyond the city’s underworld. Kaz assembles a crew whose talents include espionage, sharpshooting, demolition, magical combat, and intimate knowledge of Grisha hunters. Their plan begins with entering the fortress disguised as prisoners, but competing loyalties and private histories complicate every stage. The novel combines fantasy with the machinery of a heist, following damaged young outcasts whose survival depends on trusting one another without ever becoming entirely trustworthy.
