Description

Alina Starkov is an orphan and army mapmaker in Ravka, a kingdom divided by the monster-filled Shadow Fold. During a dangerous crossing, she tries to save her childhood friend Mal and unexpectedly unleashes a power capable of summoning light. Identified as a rare Sun Summoner, Alina is taken to the Grisha capital, where the formidable Darkling oversees her training. Courtly attention and her attraction to him offer a new identity, but isolation and difficulty mastering her gift leave her uncertain where she belongs. When her tutor Baghra warns that the Darkling created the Fold and intends to control Alina’s power, the promise of rescuing Ravka becomes entangled with conquest. The fantasy combines magical training, romance, and political manipulation around a heroine learning the value of her own power.
